Addictions in the workplace

by | Jan 4, 2022 | Addiction, Rehabilitation

Contrary to popular belief, many of those struggling with addiction to prescription or illicit drugs continue to hold down a job. More than 70% of those with an alcohol use disorder also work.

Some people who abuse drugs or alcohol whilst on the job might do so to qualify as “high-functioning” or to help them reach personal or professional success despite their substance misuse. High-functioning is not healthy. Substance abuse in the workplace and addiction can cause significant damage.

Workplace drug abuse effects

It is a fact that substance abuse in the workplace can lead to decreased productivity, increased physical injuries, and in some cases fatalities.

When under the influence the likelihood of workplace accidents skyrockets. Other side effects of addiction and drug abuse at work can include:

  • Withdrawal symptoms affecting job performance
  • Inability to focus or concentrate while under the influence
  • Needless risk-taking affecting the company
  • Illegal sales of drugs to coworkers and other illicit activities

Family, friends and co-workers can also be affected by those who abuse drugs and often experience mental stress at work too.

Signs of workplace drug abuse and addiction

Most addiction sufferers hide their drug abuse or alcoholism from their friends and family. This also includes employers and co-workers and there are some signs to look out for which may suggest there is a problem.

Someone who is abusing drugs might display signs of different behaviour. This may include avoidance, pointing blame for personal mistakes, lateness or even spending more time away from their workstation/desk etc. Other indicators may include:

  • Openly talking about money problems
  • A decline in personal appearance or hygiene
  • Complaints of failing relationships at home
  • Taking time off for vague illnesses or family problems

Workplace drug abuse and addiction treatment

Employees might be reluctant to take time off from work for an inpatient rehab treatment programme. However, this may be the best option for their recovery. At Open Minds we are fully confidential and work with individuals and their employers to help them on the road to recovery.

Detox Services

As well as being an inpatient rehab we are fully qualified to carry out a detoxification programme. This is supervised on a daily basis by medical professionals who are highly experienced in delivery and monitoring detox programmes for alcohol, illicit drugs and prescription medication abuse.

During detox, clients are welcomed as part of the group as soon as they step foot in the door. Our services include rehab therapy groups and personal counselling. New arrivals generally develop good working relationships with their peer group and staff, which we believe is one of the reasons why we have an excellent retention rate through detox and ongoing rehabilitation.
